Promoting Empowerment Through Awareness for Lesbian and Bisexual Women (PETAL) is a women’s rights organisation dedicated to achieving social, economic, and gender justice for women—especially lesbian, bisexual, and queer women—through advocacy and empowerment. We operate with volunteer resources and grant funds to augment public sector social service delivery. We maintain human rights advocacy and research strategic alliances with national and international organisations.
PETAL works to empower lesbian and bisexual women by increasing their knowledge of various issues affecting them directly or indirectly, with gender-based violence (GBV) prevention being a priority area of work since its inception. Other priorities include providing human rights education, food security, free individual and couples therapy, legal literacy, limited redress support, maintaining a safe space for lesbian and bisexual women and their children, as well as facilitating women’s economic empowerment opportunities.
Mission: To achieve social, economic, and gender justice for all women in Belize, especially lesbian and bisexual women, through advocacy and empowerment.
