Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) is a non-profit, non-governmental umbrella organization established in 2004 to address the urgent need to protect and support LGBTIQ+ individuals in Uganda. SMUG works to advance the dignity, safety, and equal rights of LGBTIQ+ people through strategic advocacy and policy reform, while strengthening a coordinated national movement of LGBTIQ+ organisations. As an umbrella body, SMUG supports and helps align the efforts of diverse groups across the country by promoting collaboration, shared strategy, and collective action. The organisation also monitors the human rights environment affecting LGBTIQ+ communities, documents emerging risks and patterns of violations, and uses evidence to inform advocacy, community protection approaches, and engagement with key stakeholders. SMUG contributes to building the capacity of LGBTIQ+ organisations and community leaders, supporting safer access to essential services, and amplifying community voices in national, regional, and international spaces.
