TransWave Jamaica is the foremost human rights advocacy non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing the health, welfare, and overall well-being of the transgender and gender non-conforming community in Jamaica and across the Caribbean. Established in 2015, TransWave began as a bold and necessary advocacy initiative in the form of a blog that was created to amplify transgender voices, share lived experiences, and confront the systemic inequalities faced by gender-diverse people in the Jamaican society.
The idea for TransWave was conceived by co-founders Akilah White and Neish McLean during a transformative workshop hosted by WE-Change Jamaica and its partners. Recognizing the urgent need for structured advocacy, visibility, and support for transgender individuals, they laid the foundation for what would grow into Jamaica’s leading organization championing transgender rights and inclusion. Since its inception, TransWave Jamaica has evolved into a multifaceted organization, working at the intersection of advocacy, community engagement, health promotion, and human rights. Its work is grounded in a deep commitment to social justice and the belief that transgender and gender non-conforming people deserve dignity, respect, and equal access to opportunities and services.
TransWave’s advocacy efforts are centered on key priority areas such as:
- Legal gender recognition, ensuring that individuals can have their gender identity legally acknowledged and respected
- Equitable access to non-discriminatory healthcare, including gender-affirming services as well as HIV prevention, treatment, and care
- Access to education, free from stigma, bullying, and systemic barriers
- Safe and secure housing opportunities for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals
- Fair and inclusive employment practices, promoting dignity and economic empowerment
- Climate justice, addressing the disproportionate impact of climate change on marginalized communities
Through community-led programming, public education campaigns, policy advocacy, and partnerships with local, regional, and international stakeholders, TransWave continues to challenge discrimination while building pathways for equity and inclusion.
At its core, TransWave Jamaica is driven by a powerful vision:
“To see a Jamaica where transgender and gender non-conforming persons are included, affirmed, and enjoy all of the universally recognized human rights.”
Guided by this vision, the organization’s mission is:
“To promote change which results in the social inclusivity, recognition of rights, and legal protection of the transgender and gender non-conforming community.”
Today, TransWave Jamaica stands as a vital voice and resource within the Caribbean, fostering resilience, leadership, and visibility within the transgender community while advocating for systemic change that benefits present and future generations.
