As a community activist working in HIV and human rights advocacy for sexual and gender minorities, I often felt that I needed stronger academic tools to better serve my communities. I believe education is a powerful driver of social change. The Commonwealth Scholarship gave me the opportunity to continue my academic journey and pursue a PhD in Public Health and Policy at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
The scholarship has been transformative. It has enabled me to pursue my doctoral studies while providing the financial support needed to live and study in London. Leaving my previous job and committing fully to my studies was a difficult decision, but the Commonwealth Scholarship has made that transition possible and has perfectly supported my academic and professional goals.
The application process is highly competitive, so preparation is key. Start early and take time to clearly demonstrate your impact, achievements, and leadership experience. Be prepared to provide evidence of your work, whether through publications, social media, projects, or other documented accomplishments. Most importantly, be authentic. Reflect deeply on every question, make sure your profile aligns with the scholarship’s objectives, and ask someone you trust to review your application before you submit it.
This scholarship aligns perfectly with my ambition to become a researcher and educator. I hope to conduct research that advances social justice, generates evidence for advocacy, and contributes to improving health equity for marginalized communities. Through my work, I want to help shape policies and programs that create lasting positive change.
