Q&A: Sudean Peters on Their Commonwealth Scholarship Experience

For LGBTI+ advocates, access to education can be a powerful tool for strengthening movements, building networks and creating lasting change in communities.

In this Q&A, Commonwealth Scholar Sudean Peters shares what motivated them to apply for the scholarship, what they have gained from their time at the University of Sussex, and how the experience is shaping their work in Jamaica.

Sudean also shares advice for future Commonwealth Scholarship applicants, including the importance of having a clear vision for how you want to contribute to your community.

Applications for the 2027 Commonwealth Scholarships are now open. Find out more about the scholarship programme, eligibility and how to apply here.

What motivated you to apply for the Scholarship in the first place?

Because the scholarship was shared in queer advocacy spaces, I felt well-positioned to apply for this opportunity. I believe people like myself, who are building their communities and contributing to more just and safe experiences for queer communities, can greatly benefit from more education geared towards making them more qualified and well-rounded social leaders. Therefore, I saw this as an opportunity to learn and strengthen my contributions to my community.

What advice would you give anyone wanting to apply for a Commonwealth scholarship?

While many factors contribute to a candidate being chosen, I believe a clear goal for community betterment is a core component of a strong application. I encourage every applicant to carefully consider how they want to impact their community, how their current work aligns with those goals and the opportunities it presents.

How do you hope this scholarship will help you in your future plans?

The scholarship has allowed me to gain a world-class education at one of the leading schools in development studies, which has expanded my worldview, professional methodology and network with whom I can strengthen my LGBTQIA+ work in Jamaica. Currently, I am focused on continuing my learning about the intersections of climate justice advocacy and queer justice work to build stronger coalitions within those fields.
